For years I have used 2 and 4 man tents to camp in, even going to down to a pup tent early on. The 2 man tent I have has always been sufficient for me when I'm out on a solo hike, what I like about it is that I can keep all my gear in it at night rather than trying to find a way to stow it and not wander what got in it in the morning.
This winter I went out with my brother in a bivvy sack that I had bought for a trip up Mt. Whitney. It's designed to be small and insulated so that you preserve body heat in the snow. I found that thing to be horrendous, there was tons of condensation in it and I slept so bad that I swore I would never use it again.
I have buddies that have made the transition to hammocks and I've been considering it myself, mainly because it would be easier on me than sleeping on the ground.
I would be interested in hearing the different opinions on it.
